God's Love Poured In
Without a home, a job or a family to turn to, Paul came to Northlands Rescue Mission because he had no place else to go. He was recovering from surgery and knew his life would be at risk if he remained outside to battle the elements and frigid temperatures. But just as compelling, "I felt God was calling me to the Mission to help out in any way I could," he shares.
That was a new feeling for Paul. For 46 years, he'd put himself first, letting a serious temper get the best of him and destroying any chance for committed relationships and steady employment. But now—whether due to maturity, his medical condition or a spiritual awakening that softened his soul—he opened his heart ... God's love poured in ... and he found new purpose for his life at the Mission.
"I've been here two months now, volunteering wherever they need me," Paul says. "In the kitchen, fixing a window or doing some cleaning, whenever they call, I'm there."
We appreciate Paul's eager efforts. We're even more pleased with his progress in our programs, which are helping him develop the stability he needs to live on his own and be a contributing member of society: life-skills training, anger control, goal setting, financial management, employment preparation and, most importantly, guidance to nurture his newfound relationship with the Lord.
"I love the Christian influence of the Mission," Paul explains. "I've had my share of setbacks, but around here, people are always reminding you that God can and will see you through. It really gives you hope for the future."
When Paul transitions from our care, he'll be ready and willing to see where God takes him. "I want to serve Him in any way I can—especially in helping people who are hurting. I hope to have a personal impact on the lives of men who've struggled with life as I have."
